Vishnu’s only female avatar, the enchantress Mohini, to turn himself into ashes. Bhasmasura.
Basmasura Mohini is a captivating mythological tale from Hindu lore, frequently brought to life through classical Indian dance. The story centers on Basmasura, a powerful demon who receives a boon from Lord Shiva: anyone whose head he touches will instantly turn to ashes (bhasma). Drunk with power, Basmasura attempts to test the boon on Shiva himself, creating chaos and panic.
To save the world and protect Shiva, Lord Vishnu assumes the form of Mohini, an enchanting and graceful divine woman. Using charm, wit, and mesmerizing dance, Mohini beguiles Basmasura into imitating her movements—ultimately tricking him into placing his own hand on his head, thus destroying himself.
This dramatic tale blends humor, beauty, suspense, and spiritual symbolism, and is a favorite narrative in Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi repertoire. Through expressive abhinaya (acting) and lyrical movements, dancers bring this story to life, showcasing the triumph of intelligence and divine intervention over arrogance and evil.
